Dear Parents/Guardians,
The Governors and Senior Leadership Team are currently in the process of reviewing the provision we make for all members of our school community, in particular those with a disability, and how we can make everyone feel safe and welcome.
The Disability Equality Duty (DDA) requires schools to take a more proactive, more explicit, more involved and more comprehensive approach to promoting disability equality and eliminating discrimination. Statistics indicate that 24% of the adult population and 7% of all children have a disability.
The definition of disability is 'a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities'. This definition includes a wide range of impairments, including hidden impairments such as dyslexia, colour blindness, autism, speech and language impairments or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Medical conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis, severe Asthma, Diabetes and Cancer are also deemed disabilities.
If you consider yourself or your child to be included in the above definition, it would be useful if you could share your personal opinions, experiences or expertise with us. We would also appreciate any input from extended family or friends who come into contact with the school. Suggestions are warmly welcomed whether about practical issues or raising awareness of a particular need.
Any responses will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Yours Sincerely,
Stephanie Taylor (SENCO) & Anne-Marie McDermott (School Governor)
